Web Design Gimmicks that annoy Users

Web designers are notorious for trying to outdo one another by providing gimmicks and cutting edge design features when it comes to web design. While many of the design features are interesting and even fascinating, for the most part, they don’t actually provide users with the solutions they came to your website for.

Slow Loading Pages

One of the main frustrations for web users is the time it takes for a website to load.

People want to be able to use your site as quickly as possible. Research shows that those websites that take more than 3 seconds to load will lose up to 70% of their site visitors. This not only affects bounce rate but also affects ranking in Google search engine. When a user searches the web, they want to move from the results to the content as quickly as possible.  When the site now takes forever to load many will simply search elsewhere.

Be mindful of those elements in web design which I like the way to slow the site down. Not only is web design a conversion factor, but as far as it affects site speed, it is also a ranking factor for Google.

CSS, images, and JS often result in a slow page loading. Google Page speed analyser is a great tool you can use to discover your page-loading errors and suggestions on how to fix them.

Complex Navigation and Information Overload

Complexity is another factor that annoys users. When the site layout and design are too ambiguous for users to navigate, users tend to opt out of such a site. Simplicity is very important when designing and configuring a website. Users must be able to easily locate what they are looking for.

Even the Google AdSense policy frowns at a poorly arranged website with difficult navigation. Many web owners want most of their information on the front page where it can be easily seen. This results in a stuffy homepage with too much content or content overload which makes it difficult for users to easily navigate and locate the content they want.  Not limited to this, using too many fonts, color scheme, images and adverts on a single page affect the page’s navigation and tends to turn users away.

Excessive Use of Ad Codes

Excessive pop-ups, content overlay and redirection annoy users. In 2004, Pop-up ads were voted the most hated element on the web. People rarely go to a site for no other reason, but you browse. Even less, do visitors come to your site to see what exciting things may or may not pop up with a browse your web pages.

People want information: They want something specific.

Nobody likes an interruption, and nobody likes pop-ups. No matter how pretty they are if they are not what the user ask for their redundant and they are roadblocks to user responding positively to your website. Advertisements in the form of banner or links are usually enough to keep your website user-friendly and simple in design.

Advertisements that interrupt increase your bounce rates and lower time on site – two vital metrics in search optimisation.

Too many scripts (from ad codes) also increases the time required for a web page to load as it contains several JS scripts. A good web designer will keep your web pages free from the harsh and excessive usage of advertisements, and your users will reward you with greater engagement.

Complicated Captcha Codes

One of the gimmicks web owners utilise in abundance (and perhaps out of necessity) is adding complicated Captcha codes to small business websites. Captchas are frequently placed on the registration page, comment page, payment page, and log-in pages. Although Captchas are used to add an extra security level to the site, most Captchas are overly complicated and downright annoying.

Users are typically frustrated by catches which they cannot read.

If you have already interrupted them with a pop-up and ask them to fill out a form for a free ebook and now then confronted with a complicated captcha code, you can say goodbye to that visitor. Look for alternatives that are equally secure yet less complicated for users to complete.

Akismet for WordPress blogs as well as Wordfence Security is are both very good alternatives to capture and can combat spamming and robot visits as well as adding another level of security to your site.
